Solar Energy Research Institute of Singapore: Co-development of a back contact cell. Targeting 21.5% production efficiency, and up to 23.5% laboratory test efficiency within 3 years
Australia National University: A 24.4% maximum conversion efficiency has been achieved in the lab for n-type mono c-Si cells. Small-scale pilot production can currently reach a maximum conversion efficiency of 21%, and the corresponding mass production line is already in production.

The new Trina State Key Laboratory is a state of the art facility designed to foster technological innovations and drive PV technologies. Its goal is to explore promising PV materials, cell and module technologies, and improve system level performance. The lab will also serve as a platform to bring together technical capabilities from strategic partners including customers, PV component suppliers, universities, and other research institutions.

Chief Scientist

Dr. Pierre Verlinden – Chief Scientist and Vice-Chair of the State Key Laboratory of PV Science and Technology at Trina Solar

Dr. Verlinden has more than 30 years of experience in PV technology research, development, manufacturing and commercialization. His expertise in PV technology began in 1979 as researcher and lecturer at the Microelectronics Laboratory of the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium, and has taken him to many top institutions around the world.

Prior to Trina, he served as Director of R&D at SunPower Corporation, USA, where he was responsible for the development of silicon solar cells with world-record efficiency for high-value applications. Pierre obtained his Master and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium.

Dr. Verlinden has published over 90 scientific papers for PV conferences and peer-reviewed journals, one book chapter on high-efficiency silicon solar cells for CPV applications, and holds 10 patents. He is a Senior Member of IEEE, an active member of IEC, as well as a committee member of several international PV conferences.
