High-alpine solar power in Kühtai, Austria
Kühtai, Austria
At around 2,350 metres above sea level in Kühtai, in the Austrian Tyrol, a 2 MWp solar installation is taking shape. Bergbahnen Kühtai is the project’s client, investor and operator, and the installation is designed to support the resort’s electricity supply, particularly during its high-demand winter season.

The modules are mounted vertically to make the most of the low winter sun, aligning generation with the resort’s seasonal needs. According to the yield forecast, around 60% of the array’s expected annual output of approximately 3 GWh will be generated in winter. The project also draws on existing site infrastructure for construction and grid integration.

Building at this altitude brings its own demands. The mounting structure and foundations must withstand high wind and snow loads, while access, material transport and assembly in high-alpine terrain add logistical complexity.

As general contractor, HTB Baugesellschaft m.b.H. is responsible for overall project delivery, including planning, design, foundations, steel construction, structural assembly and site logistics. The installation uses a mounting structure developed and patented by HTB, which retains full responsibility for its development, design and structural engineering. Selina Photovoltaic GmbH handles the PV electrical design, procurement of electrical equipment and electrical installation.

Trinasolar supplied the Vertex N Shield modules and provided technical support with module selection and the coordination of module-specific installation requirements.

“In Kühtai, our aim is to generate solar electricity especially when the mountain resort needs it most: in winter. This requires module selection, mounting design and local conditions to be carefully aligned. Trinasolar has supported us with module selection and technical coordination. Together with HTB and Bergbahnen Kühtai, we are delivering a project that combines alpine solar generation with the use of existing infrastructure.” – Selina Photovoltaic

Construction began in June 2026, with electricity generation scheduled to commence in November 2026.
