At Basingstoke Golf Club in Hampshire, a 118.35 kWp solar installation designed and delivered by Spirit Energy is helping the club reduce its operating costs while advancing its ambition to become one of the greenest sporting venues in the region. Completed in January 2025, the project was taken from first enquiry to commissioning in just three months, with 263 Trinasolar Vertex S+ modules installed across two roofs: 83 modules on the maintenance shed and 160 on the driving range.
Together, the two arrays are expected to generate around 104,000 kWh of clean electricity each year, with approximately 82.8% consumed directly on site. This high level of self-consumption reflects the steady daytime demand of the clubhouse and course facilities, and means only a small proportion of generation is exported to the grid under the Smart Export Guarantee. On a typical summer day, the system is forecast to meet around 30% of total site demand without the need for battery storage.
The financial returns are compelling. The combined system is projected to deliver annual bill savings of roughly £21,000, a simple payback period of around three years, and an internal rate of return of 42% over the life of the installation. Environmentally, the project will prevent approximately 23,432 kg of CO₂ from entering the atmosphere each year, contributing meaningfully to the club's sustainability goals. Spirit Energy's collaboration with Trinasolar has provided Basingstoke Golf Club with a high-performing, unobtrusive system that demonstrates how leisure venues with busy schedules can adopt large-scale solar quickly and effectively.
