Cobham Service Station
Cobham, Surrey, UK
At Cobham Service Station in Surrey, one of the UK's busiest motorway service areas, Extra MSA Group has invested in a large-scale rooftop solar installation as part of its nationwide sustainability strategy. Designed and installed by Spirit Energy, the 368.55 kWp system comprises 810 Trinasolar Vertex S+ modules spread across the site's large flat roof, optimally orientated to maximise generation throughout the year.

The system is expected to generate approximately 305,159 kWh of clean electricity annually, with an exceptionally high 96% of that output consumed directly on site. This strong self-consumption reflects how well the array is matched to Cobham's load profile, which includes continuous demand from retail outlets, restaurants, refrigeration, EV charging points and essential building services around the clock.

The financial and environmental returns are substantial. At 2025 electricity rates, the installation is forecast to deliver annual savings of around £77,000, with a payback period of approximately four to five years and cumulative savings projected to exceed £1.9 million over its 25-year lifetime. On the environmental side, the system will offset 68.7 tonnes of CO₂ every year, supporting Extra MSA Group's progress towards its long-term net-zero objectives. Delivered as a turnkey package by Spirit Energy, covering surveys, design, installation, and commissioning, the project demonstrates how large commercial operators can achieve meaningful environmental impact while improving operational efficiency through their collaboration with Trinasolar.
