For years, "Save 30 percent with the ITC" was instrumental in the residential solar sales pitch — a value hook that helped land the sale.

With the loss of the Investment  Tax Credit (ITC) for homeowners at the end of 2025, that closer is gone. But the case for solar hasn't gotten weaker. The value is still there, but it's just more nuanced.

While Bloomberg forecasts as much as a 20% decrease in residential solar installations, even the most dire projections leave room for significant variance, and the most agile industry opportunists figure to capitalize on any gaps in the market. The exact impact remains to be seen, but what’s clear is that the expiration of Section 25D of the ITC forces installers to compete even more aggressively for a shrinking customer base.

Installers with the most compelling value propositions always have a leg up, but that may prove more true than ever with a more selective, skeptical buyer pool. What should that value prop entail in 2026 and beyond? 

Installers are already gaining traction through a few pathways:
  • Pitching rooftop solar as a way to lock in low energy costs for decades at a time when utility bills are rapidly rising. Installers who can offer to keep payback periods steady during a time of subsidy uncertainty can not only retain customers, but generate more new business through referrals.
  • Tapping into resilience as a mainstream buying motivator. The EIA found U.S. customers averaged about 11 hours without power in 2024 — nearly double the annual average of the prior decade - so offering to keep people online is a differentiator 
  • Energy independence as a means of home-value appreciation. Pitching the long-term payoff still works — if outlined in the proper context. The sellers and installers who can make the math make sense (and show their work) will win more new business in this new era.
The new pitch has multiple legs: energy independence, protection from rising utility rates, resilience against outages — and, of course, home value appreciation. Finding the right balance and determining which of those legs to stand on depends on the customer: their location, their long-term goals, and their willingness to make certain short-term tradeoffs.

 

Stressing that Solar Homes Still Sell for More



Ultimately, most homeowners want the same thing: to increase the long-term value of their property. The simple truth is that solar-powered homes still offer one of the most efficient avenues to that endgame. But too often the pitch downplays this angle. 

The data is compelling enough to refamiliarize yourself with:

  • A SolarReviews study found that homes with solar panels sold for almost 7% more than comparable non-solar homes, representing approximately $29,000 in additional value for median-priced homes. 
  • Solar homes also sell 13-20% faster than comparable homes without solar systems.
  • Solar can be a differentiator in competitive markets. A study of more than 5,000 California homes sold between 2020 and 2023 found that homes with owned solar panels sold for 5–10% more than comparable homes without solar, with newer systems adding more value than older ones.

Regional variation matters, sure. Solar premiums range from 2.7% to 9.9% depending on location, with high-electricity-cost states consistently showing the largest premiums.

And buyers might be rightly wary of inheriting contracts. Third-party-owned systems (leases and PPAs) showed no consistent increases in resale price. Owned systems offer the greatest advantage in both sale speed and price premium, so sellers of residential solar need to thread the needle and be prepared to include appropriate caveats. 

The expiration of the Section 25D credit has also created an interesting resale dynamic: Buyers can no longer replicate an existing system at the same net cost, making grandfathered systems potentially more valuable. With electricity rates up annually in regions like the Northeast, a solar system that offsets significant electricity costs becomes more valuable each year it operates.

 

The Listing Conversation: What Installers Should Be Telling Customers



The property value argument works best when installers proactively educate customers not just at the point of sale, but throughout the relationship. That means incorporating key talking points organically into discussions or follow-up communications.

The data supports the long-term logic: Some 63% of real estate agents report that promoting energy efficiency in listings is valuable, and as many Millennial and Gen Z buyers increasingly prioritize sustainability, solar homes have a structural market advantage that grows over time.

It’s also worth reiterating that an owned solar system is a "grandfathered" asset — buyers are getting decades of energy savings without the upfront cost or installation disruption.  And installers can encourage customers to document as much as possible: original installation details, warranty records, and energy production data. Keeping copious records can help support a stronger listing price.

Lastly, the marketing matters. Installers should suggest working with a solar-informed real estate appraiser and ensuring solar is prominently featured in any future MLS listing — if not elsewhere (such as social channels). 

The installer's role always extends beyond installation, but that may be even more true in an era where long-term payoff is the priority over any near-term tax credit windfall.
